McCaig’s Tower is an unfinished late-Victorian monument and public garden on Battery Hill above Oban. The surviving structure is a circular ring of Bonawe granite with 94 pointed arches.

John Stuart McCaig, an Oban businessman, banker and civic figure, designed and funded the monument. Contemporary reporting treated the design as his own, although his architectural training is not documented.

The documented scheme began in 1895, with a major construction stage in 1897. The surviving ring was left unfinished by about 1900, and McCaig died in 1902.

It was intended to provide work for local masons and artisans, improve Oban with a public monument and viewpoint, and commemorate John Stuart McCaig’s family.

The nickname reflects its grand, unfinished and partly ornamental character. It also became associated with court criticism of the proposed family-memorial scheme.

Not literally. Its circular arena-like plan recalls Roman buildings such as the Colosseum, but its pointed arches and proposed central tower are Gothic in character.

Contemporary plans described a central tower, viewing platform, choir chapel, museum, art gallery and connecting arcades. McCaig’s will also proposed statues of his family.

There is no ticket office or admission charge for the open-air monument and garden. Access can still be affected by weather, maintenance or local restrictions.

The town-centre walking routes are steep and include steps. A small parking area is closer to the tower, but this guide has not found an authoritative current audit confirming step-free gradients, surfaces and parking; check locally before travelling.

Kerrera is prominent across Oban Bay, with Mull beyond. In clear conditions the wider panorama can include Lismore, Morvern and Duart Castle.

The reliable sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a specific military role for the tower. Oban had major wartime importance, but any claim about formal use of the monument needs an archival citation.
