Oban below the arches
The immediate view takes in Oban’s streets, harbour and the movement of ferries, fishing boats and yachts across the bay. The tower’s elevation makes the relationship between town, harbour and islands unusually clear.
Kerrera forms the dominant island across Oban Bay. Mull lies beyond it. In suitable conditions, the wider panorama may include Lismore, the Morvern hills and Duart Castle.
Why the view changes
West-coast weather can change quickly. Low cloud may hide the distant hills while leaving the harbour sharp and clear. Strong light can reveal islands that disappear into haze later in the day.
Descriptions of the panorama should therefore be conditional. A published panorama can help orientation, but it cannot guarantee what every visitor will see on a particular day.
Looking responsibly
The monument is also a garden and listed structure. Keep routes through the site clear and avoid climbing the masonry for a photograph or a marginally higher viewpoint.
